NorthLight School, Thursday, February 16, 2017 — NorthLight School qualified for the second round of the South Zone C Division Football Championship for the first time in the school’s history with a 6-0 victory over Beatty Secondary School in their final Group A match.
Three goals from Muhammad Haziq Raiyan (NLS #17) and one each from Muhammad Nur Aidil (NLS #7), Mas Ridzwan (NLS #5) and Mohamal Haikal (NLS #6) ensured the home side remained unbeaten as they finished their first round campaign in style.
NorthLight’s coach Martin Tan, who is also their principal, called the victory a “fantastic result” for the team.
“This is the first time that our soccer team has made it into the second round of the competition and that’s something we really want to celebrate,” Tan said.
“They improved game after game and today, I think they peaked in some ways in terms of their attacking abilities and scoring abilities, so we are very happy for the boys.”
Beatty managed to hold NorthLight in the first half to just two goals but had no answer in the second half, conceding four goals. The visitors were dominated from the start and was pinned in their own half for much of the game.
Muhammad Nur Aidil opened the scoring in the tenth minute after Mas Ridzwan’s backheel set him up just outside the box. The team captain took one touch before powering the shot into the top corner.
Mas Ridzwan then turned from provider to goalscorer when he broke into the box shrugging off the defenders around him. His first shot was brilliantly saved by Darpan Gurung (BTY #20) but the ball fell kindly towards Mas Ridzwan who made no mistake from close range.
Beatty hung on for the half-time whistle, putting their bodies on the line and frustrating the home side by last minute tackles and good blocks. The visitor’s skipper Anson Zhong was relentlessly battling away in the middle of the park but to no avail.
On the 39th minute, a NorthLight cross from the right evaded all the players in the box and fell kindly to Mohamal Haikal on the left wing who beat the keeper with a low drive. Beatty’s resistance crumbled as they conceded four minutes later against NorthLight’s Mohamad Haziq Raiyan.
It was Haziq’s show after that as he ran the defence riot, scoring another in the 55th minute before capping his hat-trick with a penalty in the 57th minute.
Despite the heavy defeat, Beatty’s coach Simon Khua is taking the campaign so far as a learning experience for his charges, whom he said are mostly secondary one students. He stressed that his team did not have much preparations before the tournament and vowed to come back stronger next year.
“I am very grateful to have all these boys, they are very brave and they go for it but never give up,” said Kua, 61.
“We are looking forward for next year not this year, because this year we have nothing prepared at all.”
