Republic Polytechnic, Tuesday, February 29, 2017 — Singapore Chinese Girls’ School (SCGS) defeated Christ Church Secondary School (CCS) 48-45 to earn a final place in the North Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
SCGS will defend their title against North Vista Secondary in the final at Republic Polytechnic, 11.30am, on March 6, 2017.
Christ Church led 12-5 after the first quarter, with Chew Sheng Xuan (#23) and Kau Wen Qi (#32) scoring the majority of the points.
However, Christ Church lost their winning momentum in the second quarter, scoring only six points.
SCGS took advantage to come back strong in the second quarter. Valentia Wong’s (#21) successful 3-pointer regained the lead for Christ Church, but Nadia Ghani (#9) scored a 3-pointer in reply.
In the second half of the third quarter, Christ Church made another good attempt to reduce the deficit with Chew Sheng Xuan (#23) throwing off the SCGS defence and assisting Shannevie Teo (#26) in scoring.
However, Patricia Orenza (#7) of SCGS stole multiple passes and managed to score a whopping 18 points, giving SCGS a lead of eight points going into the final quarter.
Refusing to accept defeat, Christ Church raked up a total of 18 points in the final quarter with Kau Wen Qi (#32) scoring two 3-pointers, and Valentia Wong (#21) scoring almost every free throw.
However, SCGS’s defence were just too strong for Christ Church and they wrapped up a 48-45 win.
SCGS captain Patricia Orenza (#7) said, “We kept fighting despite playing badly in the first quarter. We took our coaches advice on how to defend better. That helped us step up our game in the second half.”
Teammate Mabel Anton (#10) said, “The team has nothing to lose, so I just tried my best to score as many points as I could for my team.”
Christ Church captain said, “The outcome was not what we expected but we will try to maintain our confidence for the 3rd/4th game and give it our all.”
