Anglican High, Thursday, March 2, 2017 — Anglican High School’s (AHS) three-point sharp shooting allowed them to cruise past Dunman High School (DHS) to clinch third place in the East Zone B Division Girls’ Basketball Championship.
Both teams will advance to the National Championship after the March school holiday break.
The game started with both teams shooting poorly. The usual open layups and shots were not falling.
The shooting slump went on until Fionn Yeo (AHS #8) made a three to break the stalemate.
This three boosted Anglican High’s morale. They upped the intensity of their defense to stop Dunman High from having easy shots.
Despite that, Gladys Lim (DHS #12) made a three to bring the game back to a tie. This three point spurred Dunman high to play harder as they upped their defensive intensity.
Undaunted, Anglican High played on calmly. They passed the ball around until they found the open shooter at the baseline corner. This battle plan was effective as the Anglican High shooters were left wide open at the baseline.
Anglican High capitalised on the successful play and continued using it, sinking another two three-pointers in the process.
Anglican High were up 16-10 after the first quarter.
Anglican High’s two three-pointers at the end of the first quarter were a huge morale booster. They started the second quarter hot. They caught fire and were making most of their open shots and layups.
However Dunman High fought back by driving more to draw fouls. As their drives were successful, this forced Anglican High to have a tighter defense, leaving wide open shooters outside.
Despite that, Dunman High were not able to capitalise on their open shots. However, they were able to draw fouls on many occasions which sent them to the free-throw lines. This helped cut the lead Anglican High had on them.
The first half ended with Anglican High up 33-21.
Anglican High continued their hot streak of shooting. At the same time, their defensive intensity remained high. This helped their lead to grow.
Dunman High depleted their stamina by the fourth quarter as they only had 10 players on their roster. Their passes started getting sloppy. The players were lapsing on defense and were not securing their defensive rebounds.
Anglican High took advantage of that to score more baskets as their lead grew wider.
Their defense also limited Dunman High to only five points in the last quarter.
With nine three-pointers made, Anglican High went on to clinch third in the East, defeating Dunman High 64-38.
Anglican High captain, Tan Hui Juan (AHS #0), said, “I think our defense was very good. Everyone contributed points today. Our teachers and our teammates were very encouraging, we were cheering each other on and whenever a person did something good, we will cheer. The cheer kept us going throughout the game.
“For now it’s just more training for us to prepare for the Nationals.”
Dunman High captain, Gladys Lim (DHS #12), said, “We put up quite a good fight in the first quarter. But from the second quarter on, weren’t able to get rebounds on both offensive and defensive ends. We only had 10on players in our rotation hence there was a lack of stamina to finish the game.”
“To my team, I am very proud of you all for putting up a good fight despite having only ten players on our roster. I am quite glad we achieved what we did not achieve two years ago.”
