Anglican High, Thursday, March 2, 2017 — Chung Cheng High School (Main) (CC) made use of their sharp shooting to overcome Dunman Secondary (DS) 52-40 to clinch third place in the East Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
With this win, Chung Cheng (Main) will enter the National Championship as the third seed from the East while Dunman enter as the fourth. The Nationals will be held after the March holiday break.
Both teams started the game cold. They went scoreless for about two minutes before Eldrin Tor (CC #2) made a three-pointer to give Chung Cheng (Main) the lead.
Dunman fought back by hustling for loose balls and rebounds to secure many offensive rebounds for second-chance opportunities. Despite that, they were not able to convert on those baskets.
Both teams were not able to capitalise on their open shots but a three-point shot from Leroy Loh (DS #12) ended the quarter with Dunman leading 8-7.
However, Chung Cheng (Main) caught fire in the second quarter.
Eldrin Tor (CC #2), recognising that he was heavily guarded, started to involve his teammates more. With his superior court vision and passing skills, he was able to find the open man on several occasion to score the easy basket.
Chin Jhin Tze (#21) also made two three-point shots in a row to increase the Chung Cheng lead.
While Dunman out-hustled Chung Cheng, their shooting woes continued. Despite the second chances, their players were not able to capitalise.
Chung Cheng went on a run to outscore Dunman 24-11 in the second quarter.
Despite Ye Xinyu (DS #7) scoring four three-pointers consecutively, Chung Cheng proved unstoppable.
With every shot that Dunman made, Chung Cheng answered back with a few of their own. Dunman had no solution for their opponents’ hot shooting.
Chung Cheng went on to secure the 52-40 victory over Dunman to clinch third place.
Chung Cheng captain, Li Ye (CC #13), said, “We motivated each other, kept pushing each other and ran our plays and found the open man. That was what kept us hot the whole game. For now, We will take things one step at a time as we look ahead to the Nationals.”
His teammate, Chin Jhin Tze (CC #21), added, “We learned from the DHS game. We learn not to be so rushed in our plays. We have to keep our composure.”
