National Stadium, Friday, May 28, 2017 — Nan Hua High School captain Phoebe Tay narrowly held off the challenge of Amanda Wong from CHIJ (Toa Payoh) to finally strike gold at the 58th National Schools Track and Field Championships in the B girls 800 metres, while Arissa Rashid led from start to finish to win the A girls race in a new personal best.
Phoebe powered into the lead with about 300 metres to go in the race, but Amanda nearly caught her at the line after a powerful surge. Phoebe eventually finished in 2 minutes 27.80 seconds, just 0.06 second ahead of Amanda. Hwa Chong Institution’s Arissa won with a time of 2:23.34, a good two seconds ahead of Levyn Wong who claimed silver for Dunman High School ahead of Pebbles Lee of National Junior College in another close finish.
“I feel great,” said Phoebe, who shrieked in delight after results flashed on the stadium screen confirmed her victory. She had finished seventh at the National Schools Cross Country Championships in March and was part of the B girls team that claimed Nan Hua’s first ever cross country team title. “They kicked way earlier than I expected, but thankfully I held on.”
For both winners, this was their first individual gold medal at these championships. Arissa had finished second in the A girls 1500m and Phoebe 5th in the B girls 1500m. Phoebe was a double gold-medallist two years ago in the C girls 1500m and 3000m.
“Oh my god, I can’t believe it!” Arissa screamed in delight right after the race. “I improved my PB by four seconds. I guess I thrive on the adrenaline of running here at the National Stadium.”
