Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, February 12, 2018 — Montfort Secondary School (MSS) survived a 4th quarter comeback by Bowen Secondary School (BW) to claim a hard-earned 46-43 victory in the 2nd round of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
Melvin Jovan Gho (BWS #0) led all scorers with a game-high 20 points, while teammate Toh Xi En (BWS #1) added 11 points. Montfort was led by Laxamana Gio David (MS #21) who scored a team-high 12 points while Tan Wei Ren Benjamin (MS #13) chipped in with 10 points.
Bowen found themselves cold on offense in the opening quarter, missing three of their first four free throw attempts as well as plenty of good looks at the basket.
On the other hand, Montfort were able to hit the floor running on offense, with crisp ball movement creating plenty of open looks in the paint and beyond the arc. The first quarter ended with Montfort leading 13-7.
Bowen would proceed to flip the switch in the second quarter, where they caught fire on offense and clamped down on the defensive end to outscore Montfort 14-5 in the period. Melvin Jovan Gho (BWS #0) was red hot in the second period, where he exploded for 16 points on a wide array of shots to give Bowen a 21-18 lead at half time.
Not to be outdone, Montfort turned the tables on Bowen in the third quarter, where they shut down Bowen offensively while turning in a 19-8 scoring blitz in the third quarter to storm to a 37-29 lead.
In a nail-biting final quarter, Bowen blitzed Montfort with a 14-6 scoring run to claw their way back to a 43-45 scoreline with 29 seconds remaining.
However, a defensive lapse allowed Tan Wei Ren Benjamin (BWS #13) to draw a foul with 7.9 seconds left. He converted one of two free throws to make it 46-43 in Montfort’s favor.
Bowen’s last ditch attempt at a comeback fell short, as they were unable to put up a shot over Montfort’s full court press before the final buzzer, sealing a bitter 43-46 defeat against Montfort.
Bowen will face Hougang Secondary on 14 February at 12 noon, while Montfort will play against Christ Church Secondary on the same day at 2.20pm. Both matches will be held at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
