Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, February 12, 2018 — North Vista Secondary (NV) put in a professional display on their way to record a comfortable 75–17 victory over Chung Cheng High (Yishun) [CCHY] in the second round of the North Zone B Division Basketball Championship.
The win was North Vista’s second straight, having defeated Edgefield Secondary in their previous match. They improved their record to 7–1 for the season. Chung Cheng High (Yishun) remained without a win in the second round and dropped to 3–5 overall.
In a match which North Vista led from start to finish, Justen Chiam (NV #11), Reuben David T Amado (NV #30) and Sim Yi Brenndon Ariffin (NV #5) contributed 14, 13 and 10 points respectively, as the team looked to reclaim the North Zone B Division Championship crown which they relinquished to Presbyterian High in 2017. Justin Heok (CCHY #9) tallied seven points for his team in the loss.
Sim Yi (NV #5) executed a beautiful behind the back pass to Justen (NV #11) for an open lay-up to put North Vista up 7–2 with 7:13 remaining in the 1st quarter. A myriad of fast break opportunities for North Vista later in the opening quarter helped them close the quarter on a 13–0 run to lead 21–4 after one.
Goldwyn Neoh (CCHY #6) scored the first basket of the second quarter but that proved to be the only basket Chung Cheng High (Yishun) would manage in the quarter. North Vista scored 23 unanswered points to close out the half.
The start of the third quarter saw Amos Tai (NV #7) and Vincent Gerard Embay Bancod (NV #4) called for an offensive foul and a travelling violation respectively as North Vista took some time to find their footing after the break. Justen (NV #11) then scored with a fast break lay-up at the buzzer as North Vista led 61–10 after three quarters.
Chung Cheng High (Yishun) continued to fight and their efforts were rewarded when they outscored North Vista 7–6 in the first 6:43 of the fourth quarter, culminating in three free throw attempts for Goldwyn (CCHY #6) after he was fouled on a three-point attempt.
Chung Cheng High (Yishun) could not narrow the score further as North Vista closed out the game on an 8–0 run to emerge with a 75–17 win.
Despite a 58-point victory, North Vista felt they could have played better.
“We did not play to our expected standards. We expected something better and there is much more room for improvement,” said Justen (NV #11).
When quizzed about the areas of improvement the team hoped to make, Reuben (NV #30) said: “Our communication and decision making.”
North Vista will next play Woodgrove Secondary while Chung Cheng High (Yishun) will take on Edgefield Secondary. Both matches will tip-off at 1.10pm on February 14 at the Singapore Basketball Centre.
