Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, April 9, 2018 — Despite easily taking the lead from the start and clinching gold in the A Division Girls’ Shot Put competition, Victoria Junior College’s Tan Xin Ning said she was not entirely satisfied with her performance.
Speaking about her winning distance of 10.68m, it was clear that the distance was nowhere near her best.
“I was actually kind of angry with myself but because I can definitely throw better than that,” said the 18-year-old student.
After recording her winning throw very early on, the VJC student was clearly ahead of the field.
“(My coach) was just saying that the only competition is myself, if I get it right, nobody else can chase me today, it’s just me on my own, the ring, myself and the ball,” recounted Xin Ning.
It clearly showed too. Her fifth throw of the competition actually crossed the 11-metre mark but was ruled out.
“I was just moving too fast I guess, I couldn’t really control my body weight,” said Xin Ning
“It just went too far to the left and I couldn’t control it.”
Looking ahead, Xin Ning is looking to work hard and get into prime condition for two more competitions — Asian Juniors in June and the ASEAN Schools Games in July.
With this being her final appearance as a JC 2 student in the Nationals, Xin Ning said she will miss competing in the Nationals.
“I’ll miss this, the atmosphere is amazing, it’s the best place to throw to have your teammates cheering you on and the competitors as well because we know each other very well,” said Xin Ning.
“We are close buddies,” she added.
