Padang, Saturday, November 6, 2010 — The SCC 7s women’s Cup final went Japan’s way when they beat hosts Singapore 14-0.
Despite giving their all in a cagey final, Singapore could not find a way through the tough Japanese defensive line.
Japan only managed their first try after five minutes of play after a clever run by their #12. A successful conversion made it 7-0.
The second half saw Singapore put up a better defensive play but they still could not prevent another try as Japan ran out 14-0 winners.
In the women’s Plate final, Hong Kong managed to survive India’s late rally towards the end of the first half to clinch it 21-19.
It was Hong Kong who secured the first try of the Plate final which they converted to bring the score to 7-0.
However, a gritty Indian counter attack saw their #10 free on the left to sprint home a try down the left with 2 minutes to go before the break. They then converted the try to equalise at 7-7, with everything to play for at the start of the second.
India did themselves no favours with a defensive mistake to allow Hong Kong a breakthrough to go ahead 12-7. Another chink in the Indian defence then allowed Hong Kong another try down their problematic left side.
The Singapore women’s rugby 7s team will be competing in the Asian Games for the first time in the history of the competition, starting with a rematch against Japan on Monday, November 22, 2010, in Guangzhou, China. Look out for them and give your fullest support!
