Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Thursday, January 13, 2011 — Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) took revenge on the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) for taking their semi-final spot in last year’s Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Floorball Championship with a 3-1 win that left the crowd on the edge of their seats.
The game started with a fast pace, leaving no room for error. NYP stepped up with 2 minutes left to the end of the first period. NYP’s #16 received a board pass behind SIM’s defender, creating a two-on-one situation. An effortless pass across the court to an unmarked NYP #10 saw a simple tap into the goal behind SIM’s keeper Priscilla Tan.
Barely a minute later, NYP widened the gap with Clarisse (NYP #11) dribbling down the boards, scoring with a drag shot into the far post.
The second period saw SIM attempting to close the gap, but shots by Emily Koh (SIM #17) and Rury Narita (SIM #3) went wide. A close shave saw Angela Model (SIM #79) drag shot from half-court, while the ball slipped upwards from the keeper’s hands and she lost sight of the ball. Rebounders stepped in, only to see NYP’s keeper Jana grab the ball from them.
Poor clearance by Huda (SIM #4) was intercepted by NYP’s Clarisse. However, Huda’s quick reflexes saw her step up and block Clarisse’s shot, regaining possession.
Both teams really upped the tempo in the third quarter. It was counter-attack after counter-attack as NYP tried to further the score line while and SIM wanted to close it down.
SIM were rewarded when Angela showed excellent stick work and ball control in front of NYP’s goal. Even with the pressure of 2 defenders surrounding her, her drag shot managed to penetrate through into the goal, closing the scoreline to 1-2.
NYP’s quick play saw them score yet another goal barely seconds after conceding. In a scuffle in front of SIM’s goal, clearance by a defender made the ball fall nicely into an NYP player’s blade. Instinctively, her shot went into the far post, too fast for SIM’s Priscilla to react, making it 3-1 to NYP.
NYP had a series of near misses, when #10’s shot rolled past SIM’s keeper, but hit the side post instead of going in the goal. Similarly, #5 received a pass inside SIM’s castle and her shot hit the top post.
SIM’s Angela tried again to score; unfortunately her shot hit the side post.
In a countdown counter-attack, NYP’s #5 had a rare one-on-one with SIM’s keeper, only to see her shot hit the side post.
The final whistle blew, and the game ended. It was a nerve-wracking game, with countless side post hits and counter-attacks. It was definitely one of the more exciting games thus far in the season.
