Hua Yi Secondary, Thursday, January 20, 2011 – Jurong Secondary booked a place in the second round of the B Division Girls West Zone Volleyball Championship after seeing off Hillgrove Secondary 2-0 (25-4, 25-17) in their Group A match. They will play Hua Yi Secondary on Monday, January 24 to determine who tops the group.

Jurong started their match strongly as they took the first point via a well placed drop shot by Lim Ziqing (Jurong #8). Jurong continued their scoring streak via several strong serves from Rachel Lau (Jurong #12) to set the score at 8-0. A break in Rachel’s serve allowed Hillgrove to take their first point of the match, but it was not for long as Ziqing (Jurong #8) quickly took back control of the game with a spike from the centre.

At the 11-1 mark, Hillgrove subsequently called for a time out in a bid to break Jurong’s streak but it only but momentarily slowed down their opponent’s pace. With Ziqing (Jurong #8) on service, it marked a continuation of Jurong’s scoring streak as they quickly brought themselves to set point. They sealed the set 25-4 after forcing a touch out from Hillgrove.

The second set was a completely different one from the first as Jurong suddenly stumbled. Despite taking the first point, Hillgrove got their first point early in the set after Ziqing (Jurong #8) was fouled for a net contact after some action at the net. Jurong’s pace was relatively slower as mistakes plagued their play early in the set. Hillgrove were only but one or two points away as Jurong struggled to break free.

Hillgrove eventually levelled the scores at 11-11 after seeing Jurong unable to return the ball. Jurong’s spikers who were seemingly on fire in the first set found themselves committing errors in the second, which allowed Hillgrove to constantly be of threat. The score continued neck and neck until Jurong found their footing once again and broke free to lead 18-13. A time out by Hillgrove allowed the team to notch a few more points, but Jurong surged forward to take match point after a strong spike by Ziqing (Jurong #8). Jurong then sealed the match with another spike from the outside.
