Republic Polytechnic Sports Complex, Monday, January 24, 2011 — Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) defeated Nanyang Polytechnic 6-1 to clinch the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Women’s Floorball Championship.
Both teams gingerly tested the waters, resulting in a defensive first period. The deadlock was only broken towards the end of the period by Ong Hui Hui (SIM #51) with an assist from Emily Koh (SIM #17). Both sides were jolted awake by that goal but there were no further goals in the period.
The second period saw SIM chalk up more goals on the scoresheet with another two by Hui Hui and Angela Danielle Modil (SIM #79). NYP were unable to come up with a reply and trailed 0-3 at the break.
SIM’s Angela scored again in the third period to make it 4-0 before NYP managed to come back with a goal through Nur Laila (#16) minutes later, closing the gap to 1-4. However, despite the many chances NYP had, SIM managed to sneak in two more goals, both by Ong Hui Hui, to win the match 6-1.
“I am very happy, I think it is a big moment for them. They met a team that they lost to. I think they played with a lot of effort and a lot of heart. I think they were great, I think they put in every single ounce of energy that they had,” exclaimed SIM’s coach Kelvin.
“We lost to them (NYP) in the beginning (group stage). So we wanted to come back this time round. To be honest, I think they had a lot of chances in the last period where they could have scored a couple more. But I think my team fought harder and I think it was kind of fair that we were the winners today,” added Kelvin.
Captain of the SIM team Rury Marina was jubilant at their victory.
“I am very very happy, of course, satisfied. Very proud of the girls, everybody. I think we all played well today. Throughout the whole game. I think we trained really hard, I think our mindset was right and we were focused today and we were really thinking about going all the way and it paid off.”
“I think one can see from the start that we really wanted it and throughout the game every single period we went in and everybody did their best, 100 percent all the way. I think they (NYP) fought a good fight. Throughout the whole IVP, I think they didn’t even lose a single game. I think they fought really really hard,” added Rury.
