CCAB, Friday, February 18, 2011 — It came down to the final match of the group with a semi-final place at stake for both teams but it was Gan Eng Seng that prevailed 51-46 win to advance in the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Gan Eng Seng Secondary and Fairfield Methodist Secondary each had identical records of two wins and a loss coming into this final game.

Gan Eng Seng started the match brightly, jumping to a 23-16 lead at the half due to some accurate three-point shooting from their guard #5.

However, the Fairfield team displayed their strong fighting spirit by staging a comeback in the second half, led by their forward #4. He scored with a variety of lay ups and jump shots to give his team a 41-40 lead in the fourth quarter.

The advantage seemed to affect the Fairfield team more as their play deteriorated with several unnecessary turnovers in the remainder of the game. Gan Eng Seng, on the other hand, capitalized on their chances with lay ups from their captain #9, and crucial offensive rebounding and put-backs from their centre #11.

Gan Eng Seng eventually held on for a 51-46 win to secure themselves a spot in the South Zone boys semi-final. They will next face Catholic High School, while Raffles Institution (RI) will play Peicai Secondary in the other semi-final.

RI beat Catholic High School 51-31 in an earlier group game.
