Kallang Softball Centre, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 — Catholic High’s batters had a field day with 18 runs to beat Hwa Chong Institution 18-3 in the National B Division Boys’ Softball Championship third and fourth placing match.

Hwa Chong had started the game with a single run, but errors from Hwa Chong’s pitcher Jun Wei soon allowed Catholic High to rack up six runs in the first inning.

Catholic High continued their rich vein of form in the second inning with another six runs to rack up a 12-3 lead. The notable play of that inning was Catholic High’s batter Aaron Chia almost completing a grand slam when all the bases were loaded with his teammates. He ended up on third base instead.

The third inning saw Catholic High making a rare double play to prevent Hwa Chong from scoring any runs. Wayne Toh from Catholic High then drove a pitch far outfield to enable his teammates to complete 18 runs which automatically resulted in the end of the game according to international competition rules.

(The mercy rule states that a game is stopped when any team is ahead by 15 run in the third inning.)

Raffles Institution will play Anglo Chinese School (Independent) for the B Division softball title on Thursday, March 10 at Kallang.
