B Division Girls’ Volleyball: Fairfield Methodist sweep aside Ngee Ann to top Group C

Presbyterian High, Tuesday, March 8, 2011 — Fairfield Methodist took top spot of Group C after seeing off Ngee Ann Secondary 2-0 (25-8, 25-13) in their final group match at the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship. With both teams having won their previous two matches, it was up to this decider to determine whether they progress to the next round in first or second place.

The opening moments were a hotly contested one as both teams kept the score close. Despite seeing the lead change hands several times, Fairfield pulled a fast one over Ngee Ann and pulled ahead. Fairfield never looked back after establishing a lead, as they continuously went all out to extend the score gap. Ngee Ann on the other hand found troubles with their first ball, which allowed Fairfield to further their advantage.

Fairfield soon found themselves leading 24-8 after Jocelyn (Fairfield #10) successfully blocked a Ngee Ann drop shot. Fairfield subsequently took home the last point after Ngee Ann were unable to return the ball.

The second set continued like the first, with the first part being a close affair. However, Fairfield quickly gathered themselves and went on their scoring streak once again. At the 12-7 mark, Ngee Ann called for a time out in an attempt to break Fairfield’s momentum. However, it provided no respite for Ngee Ann as Fairfield continued their rampage to reach match point with a 13-point advantage.

Ngee Ann were not going to let Fairfield have an easy win, with Wang Qi Hui (Ngee Ann #6) sending an unreturnable spike into their court. However, Ngee Ann had no further opportunity to narrow the score gap as Qi Hui’s (#6) subsequent spike went out of bounds.
