Presbyterian High, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 –- Cedar Girls’ Secondary were initially not fancied to qualify for the second round and were widely expected to lose their first match in Round 2. However, they proved all their naysayers wrong when they staged another upset by beating Shuqun Secondary 2-0 (25-19, 25-22) in their Group X, Round 2 match of the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.
Shuqun were initially in the lead, but a spirited Cedar eventually closed in and turned the tables on them. A time out by Shuqun could not break Cedar’s momentum as the latter pulled ahead after Heng Yan Jing (Cedar #9) scored several points for the team.
However, Shuqun were constantly hot on the heels of Cedar. They were however, unable to break even, and eventually saw Cedar take set point after a spike by Yan Jing (Cedar #9).
Despite trailing by six points, Shuqun were not going down without a fight as Rosanna Chua (Shuqun #8) spiked from the opposite corner to take a point for Shuqun. Yan Jing (Cedar #9) however sealed the set for the team with a spike from the outside.
The second set was a much closer affair as both teams went all out to keep the scores close. Despite Shuqun taking the lead midway, Cedar quickly closed in to level the score 21-21. As both teams headed point by point towards set point, it was Cedar who prevailed after a spike by Cheryl (Cedar #10) from the outside brought the score to 24-22.
In the fight for the last point, the ball was set up for Cheryl to take the spike. Her tap from the outside found the Shuqun block, and as she scrambled to rescue the shot, she pulled away just in time to see the blocked ball fall out of bounds.
