B Division Girls’ Volleyball: Fairfield earn semi-final spot at expense of Presbyterian High

Presbyterian High, Monday, March 28, 2011 — Fairfield Methodist beat Presbyterian High to a semi-final berth as they edged out the latter 2-0 (25-14, 25-17) in their final Group Y, Round Two match of the National B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship. Both teams were coming into the match with one win and one loss each, and it was a crucial decider as whoever won would progress.

Jia Le (Fairfield #14) led the scoring for Fairfield with 15 kills, while Jermaine Tan (Fairfield #16) followed next with ten kills and three service aces. Jia Hui (Fairfield #15) on the other hand had two kills and four service aces.

Fairfield started the set well as they stormed off to an early lead. At the 11-5 mark, Presbyterian High promptly called for a time out and this marked the start of the team’s catch up. Despite closing in midway, Fairfield quickly broke free to leave Presbyterian High in their wake. Fairfield ultimately sealed the set with a spike from the centre.

The second set was closer affair. Presbyterian High managed to keep themselves in the running as they kept the scores neck and neck. In the later half of the set, Fairfield gained an advantage, and broke free from Presbyterian High’s grip. They brought themselves to match point after a spike by Jia Le (Fairfield #14) from the centre. Jia Le then sealed the last point for her team after another spike from the centre.

Fairfield now finish second in Group Y, and will face Group X leaders Ngee Ann Secondary in the semi-finals on Friday, 2pm. Fairfield will enter the game with a psychological advantage, having beaten the latter decisively during their first round matchup. Time will tell if Ngee Ann will be able to stage an upset against Fairfield.
