Serangoon Junior College, Thursday, March 31, 2011 — Raffles institution started off their season in style with a 8-0 drubbing of their Temasek Junior College in the A Division Boys’ Football Championship.
The Vietnamese and Singaporean strike partnership of Vuong Gia Hieu and Jason Wang grabbed four goals, with captain Jayden Ong Zhi Hao
grabbing a brace. Midfielder Andrew Leow and centreback Joshua Suwe grabbed a goal each.
Early jitters in the first five minutes saw both team unable to hold possession of the ball. However, Raffles Institution soon exerted their superiority through captain Jayden Ong who dribbled past four TJC players before slotting the ball home with a delightful left foot strIke.
The goal opened the floodgate. The second goal came soon after through a corner from Tan Yong Hwee. The corner was met by an onrushing Hieu, who sneakily nicked the ball into the back of the net.
Moments later, Hieu took full advantage of a fumble by the TJC goalkeeper after a cross by Lim Zi Xuan from the right flank, slotting the ball home for his second goal of the game.
Midway through the second half, Tan Yong Hwee was brought down at the edge of the penalty box. The resulting free kick was dispatched perfectly by Jayden Ong for a 4-0 lead.
Not long after, Yeo Ping Yen displayed upper body strength to hurl the ball all the way into the penalty area from a throw in, causing great panic in the TJC defence. Hieu was there yet again to slot in his third and RI’s fifth goal of the game.
About 10 minutes before half time, Andrew Leow released a venomous shot to the top left hand corner of the post after receiving a square ball from Lim Zi Xuan, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to he spot.
The tempo clearly slowed down in the second half with RI trying to keep hold of the ball. TJC fought hard for the ball but were unable to
create any meaningful goalscoring opportunity.
The seventh RI goal looked inevitable, after Jason Wang, upon receiving a through ball by Phuc, muscled his way through a hapless TJC defence before slotting the ball into the back of the net. The goal was accompanied by loud roars and cheers from the RI supporters.
Joshua Suwe rounded off the game with arguably the best goal of the game, volleying the ball home after a Nguyen Tran’s corner.
RI will next play River Valley High on April 4th while TJC will play Millennia Institute on the same day as well.
