Victoria Junior College, Wednesday, April 20, 2011 — Victoria Junior College (VJC) continued their formidable start to the season with another victory, this time a 4-0 victory over Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) in the National A Division Girls’ Football Championship. The game was rather messy with rain making the pitch slippery, causing the ball to bounce at awkward angles and skid across the pitch.
Tan Min Yee (#19) opened the scoring, Chris Yip-Au (#10) scored two breathtaking individual efforts, and Sarah Long (#8) rounded off the scoring with the fourth goal.
VJC dominated possession throughout the game, and also had the lion’s share of chances, narrowly missing the target a few times. HCI looked content to sit back, soak up the pressure and counter attack. HCI also employed a player to man-mark VJC playmaker Chris Yip-Au (#10), which meant that she was restricted to only a few efforts throughout the game. However, she took her chances well and managed to grab two goals, which were created from out of thin air.
From kick off, VJC looked the more dangerous team, and pushed forward in droves to find the opening goal. It arrived soon after with centre-back Tan Min Yee (#19) venturing upfield before scoring, to the delight of the home team.
VJC looked much more confident after this goal, and settled into their passing rhythm. However, a wet pitch saw some passes being misplaced and this meant that VJC were struggling to score despite their dominance.
In the middle of the first half, VJC were awarded a free kick in a seemingly innocuous position on the left side outside the box. The HCI keeper, anticipating a cross, came off her line to position herself, and upon seeing this, Chris went for goal, unleashing a shot that flew into the net from a long way out, and leaving even the home fans in surprise.
However, Chris was not done and despite being heavily marked, she managed to get another goal with a well taken first-time shot from outside the box that gave the HCI keeper no chance. This had come after a half clearance from the HCI defense.
The second half took on the same story as the first, with VJC dominating possession but unable to score due to misplaced passes and shots that were slightly off target, and not helped by the surface of the pitch. HCI were also defending desperately and defending well, repelling whatever VJC were throwing at them.
However, stand in captain Sarah Long (#8) did manage to add a fourth for VJC, dribbling into the box and poking the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
