Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Wednesday, April 20, 2011 — Jannah Wong of CHIJ Katong Convent broke her own record on her way to gold in the B Division 100m Hurdles when she clocked 14.85 seconds.
Running essentially against herself, Jannah broke the time of 14.92s she had set during the morning heats. Before today, her personal best was a hand-timed 14.8s at the Singapore Athletic Association Track and Field Series 3 meet.
“I was confident of beating the record,” said Jannah, whose parents were watching in the stands. “I just went all out to try and make a better timing. I was a bit nervous.”
The national under-17 record is 14.78 set by Goh Wei Ning in last year’s Youth Olympic Games Asian Area Qualification meet. Wei Ning also ran a hand-timed 14.2s at the SAA Series 3 meet.
Jannah also qualified third best for the 400m Hurdles final slated for Monday, April 25th.
When asked which was her favourite race, she said: “Of course the 100m Hurdles! The 400m Hurdles is very tiring!”
Postscript: Jannah finished second in the 400m Hurdles final. She was leading until she clipped the second last hurdle, allowing Magdalene Ho of Nanyang Girls’ High to overtake her and win in 1:06.83s. Jannah finished second in 1:08.12s. The record of 1:03.86s for the 400m Hurdles was set by T Piriyah of Singapore Sports School in 2008.
