A Division Girls’ Volleyball: Victoria JC beat Anglo-Chinese JC in 3rd/4th placing match

CCAB, Thursday, May 5, 2011 — Victoria Junior College defeated the Anglo-Chinese Junior College 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-21) to win the 3rd/4th placing match of the A Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship.

ACJC started off well as they pulled ahead to lead 6-0 after three service aces from Dionne See (ACJC #9). A time-out call by VJC allowed the team to bounce back, as Joan Lim (VJC #10) put a stop to ACJC’s scoring streak with a spike from the outside.

VJC subsequently saw the score gap narrow to just one point after a spike by Jia Yu (ACJC #2) went into the net. However, Ho Zhiting (ACJC #8) extended ACJC’s lead once again with a spike from the outside. VJC were not going down easy and fought back to level the score via spikes from Cheryl Koh (VJC #8). They then turned the tables on ACJC to storm ahead to eventually lead 21-11. ACJC had no answer to VJC’s onslaught and eventually caved in for VJC to take the set 25-12.

ACJC were able to put up a better fight in the third set as they continuously kept the scores close to VJC. Despite trailing early in the set, ACJC managed to fight back to level the score 15-15. Subset Eleanor Toh (ACJC #7) put up several good saves to deny VJC valuable points. VJC were not going to allow ACJC to turn the tables on them and pushed hard to pull away from ACJC. Their efforts paid off and they soon took set point after a spike from Cheryl (VJC #8) clipped the back line. Melanie Tan (VJC #9) then executed a well placed drop shot to seal the set for the team.

In the first two sets, ACJC had seemed increasingly troubled and frustrated particularly when they could not send their spike over. However, knowing what was at stake for them, they pulled up their socks and went all out in the third set. They kept the scores neck and neck, and with their revived spirit, closed in on VJC midway to level the score at 14-14. The game continued to be a hotly contested affair as both sides traded blows. The score continued to be tied at the 17, 18 and 20-point marks. It was only after that did VJC make a final surge to the end to pull away from ACJC. They brought themselves to match point after a spike Cheryl (VJC #8). Despite Chew Hui Min (ACJC #3) managing to take the next for her team, it was not enough as Joan (VJC #10) sealed the match for the team with a decisive spike from the outside.

Cheryl Koh (VJC #8) led the scoring for her team with 16 kills. Team mate Joan Lim (VJC #8) followed in second place with 14 kills. ACJC were limited to 21 kills for the match while VJC put up more than double the number of kills with 45 in total. However, VJC had more unforced errors in the match, particularly in the third set where they had 11 unforced errors and one service fault compared to ACJC’s four.
