CCAB, Tuesday, July 5, 2011 — West Spring Secondary beat Zhenghua Secondary 25-17, 25-17 in a Group A match to keep their top four hopes alive in the West Zone C Division Volleyball Championship.
It was a do-or-die game for West Spring as they had previously lose to Hwa Chong Institution and one more loss would mean that they would miss out on a top four spot.
Zheng Hua started the match by taking the first point after an unsuccessful spike from West Spring spiker #13. Zheng Hua extended the lead to 4-2, but West Spring immediately came alive after a number of ace serves from #13 tgave them a one-point, 6-5 lead.
West Spring continued to keep the lead as Zheng Hua made many service and first ball mistakes. Trailing 14-18, Zhenghua quickly called a timeout to revise tactics. However, several ace serves from the West Spring #13 extended his team’s lead to 23-14.
The Zhenghua libero picked up an injury and had to be substituted out to rest awhile. West Spring took down the first set 25-17 after a service error from Zhenghua.
The second set was similar to the first set as Zhenghua again took an early lead 4-2 but West Spring managed to get back on their feet to bring the score to 10-4. Although the Zhenghua libero came back into action in the second set, Zhenghua continued to make many unforced errors with their first ball.
However, service and first ball errors by West Spring allowed Zhenghua to claw back some points. But that was only for a brief period as good spikes from their spikers #17 and #11 gave them a 17-11 lead.
Trailing 11-18, the Zhenghua coach asked for a timeout and it worked as they broke the service streak of the West Spring #13. His serve clipped the net to give Zhenghua a point at 12-19. However, Zhenghua could not stop West Spring from getting to set point at 24-16 before a drop shot by the West Spring #11 finished off the match.
With this win, West Spring will make it into the semi-finals if they win their next match against Yuhua Seconary. Zhenghua had beaten Yuhua in their previous match but with this loss to West Spring, they have to beat Hwa Chong Institution and Tanglin Secondary to keep their semi-finals hopes alive.
