Singapore Basketball Centre, Thursday, February 5, 2009 - Naval Base Secondary continued its winning streak with a thumping 73-14 victory over Presbyterian High in a girls’ B Division Basketball Championship group match.
Naval Base controlled the first quarter and never looked back throughout the match. It was an all-round performance from the team as four players completed the rout with double digits. Panmeline (NB #7) led the scoring board with 19 points while Vinnie Koh (#5), Gao Min (#6) and Ying Ying (#12) added 15, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Presbyterian High were hard pressed to win their first match of the group stage in this game, having coming into the match with four losses out of four. It was clearly a one-sided affair.
The first period ended with Naval Base taking a massive 24-0 lead.
Sherlyn Ng (PHS #5) tried single-handedly to lift spirits with a 9-point contribution but it was not enough to overcome the huge deficit. With 3 minutes and 38 seconds left in the second period, the Naval Base coach substituted the entire starting team with the reserves to give them exposure. Naval Base finished the second quarter leading 44-8.
Naval Base brought on the first team players at the start of the third period. Presbyterian High practically had no ways to handle Naval Base's scoring streak. They did not have any clear chances to make attempts at the basket.
With 4 minutes and 50 seconds left in the third quarter, the Naval Base coach again took out the entire first team and sent on the reserves. It looked like Naval the Base coach wanted his first team players to take a break and save themselves for their next match.
The Naval Base reserves played the fourth quarter and were still too strong for Presbyterian High who faced a lack of squad depth with only 9 players.
With this 14-73 loss, Presbyterian High were eliminated from the championship while Naval Base will face North Vista Secondary in their final match qualification for the next round still at stake.
In a boys’ B Division championship match, Seng Kang Secondary overwhelmed Monfort Secondary 88-23.
