Jakarta, Sunday, November 13, 2011 — Singapore’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals of the South-east Asian (SEA) Games football tournament look even slimmer today. Malaysia beat Cambodia 4-1 while Indonesia beat Thailand 3-1 to leave Singapore a mountain to climb.
Indonesia lead Group A with nine points while Malaysia are second with seven. Singapore lag in third with four.
Singapore need Indonesia to beat Malaysia and the Young Lions in turn have to beat Thailand by a bagful of goals because they have an inferior goal difference. Singapore are now in this situation because, while all the other teams managed to put four or more goals past the Cambodians, Singapore only managed to eke out a 2-1 win over them.
If Malaysia and Indonesia play out a leisurely 0-0 draw in their final group game to conserve energy, both teams will qualify for the semi-finals and Singapore will be left out in the cold and can do nothing about it.
Centre-back Safuwan Baharudin will probably not play against Thailand on Thursday, November 17th, after his ankle was injured in that calamitous first-minute collision with Shahir Hamzah in the 0-2 loss to Indonesia. Neil Vanu will also not play after his red card in the 23rd minute of the same game left his teammates having to play with 10 men for just over an hour.
In Group B, Vietnam tore apart Brunei 8-0, scoring five goals inside the first 18 minutes. Myanmar thrashed the Philippines 5-0 to secure second place. Both Vietnam and Myanmar are through to the semi-finals.
