ASEAN Para Games: Swimmers win 3 more gold while bowlers bring in 1

Solo, Indonesia, Sunday, December 18, 2011 — Singapore added three gold medals to their haul with another new record set in the pool today while our bowlers won a gold. Team Singapore is in seventh place in the overall medal tally with seven gold, three silver and seven bronze.

Swimmer Benson Tan swept up his second gold medal in as many days with a new Games record of 30.82s in his S-14, 50m butterfly event. He now has two Games records to his name, after setting a new time for the ID, 50m event yesterday.

Fellow swimmer and Paralympian Theresa Goh also bagged her second gold medal after snatching top spot in her S-5, 100m freestyle event in 1:42.84s. Singapore also claimed a bronze medal in the same event as Yip Pin Xiu clocked 2:11.33s to finish third. The Paralympics Gold medalist participated in the event after being upgraded to the S-5 class due to a lack of entrants in her original S-3 class.

Still in the pool, Stanley Lim clocked 3:41.66s to finish sixth in his S-5, 100m freestyle event, while Bryan James returned fifth in 41.14s in the S-5, 50m butterfly.

Our bowlers too were not to be denied the limelight. Thomas Yong and Mohamed Ismail B. Hussain took top spot to win the gold in their TPB1+2/3 – Doubles competition with 1567 pin falls at the Bengawan Sport Complex for Bowling.

At the Manahan Stadium, T-52, 200m athlete Eric Ting took second spot in a time of in 44.58s. However, he was not awarded a medal as he did not manage to break the Games’ record. Norsilawati Bte Sa’ad also took part in the T-52, 200m race and finished in 62.46s. In the T-53, 200m, Jack Lai emerged fourth in 35.17s.

Siva kumar s/o B.Silvermoney and Mhd. Syaiful Bin Rahmat both ran the T-20, 800m race and finished sixth and seventh respectively. Siva clocked 2:39.71s while Syaiful finished in 2:47.37s.

Singapore shuttler Tay Wei Ming continued his impressive run in the BMSTU4 men’s singles quarter final stages at the Sritex Arena. He played Narin Chort in a pulsating game, eventually overcoming the Thai 17-21, 21-7, 21-17 to progress to the semis. With a place in the final as his main motivation, Tay cruised past Vietnamese Nguyen Van Tai 21-12, 21-19 to seal his place in the gold medal match.

Tay also saw doubles action with partner Kelvin Pung in the BMSTU4 men’s doubles and the duo booked their place in the finals after coming back from behind to beat Thai pair Montree Changsom and Narin chort 16-21, 21-12 and 21-15. Both Tay and Pung will now pit their skills in two finals for Singapore tomorrow.

In table-tennis Dr. William Tan and Eugene Soh were both competing in the Class 4 and 5 men’s team competition at the Diamond Convention Center. They faced a Malaysian pair in both singles and doubles matches. Tan and Soh managed to secure a win in their doubles match but unfortunately went down in both their singles matches. Overall they lost 3-1 to Malaysia.

Luck, unfortunately was not on our side as our paddlers also went down 3-0 to a Thai pair in the same group. They will both play their remaining group games tomorrow to progress to the next round.
