CCAB, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 — Ang Mo Kio Secondary edged out Clementi Woods Secondary 2-1 to set themselves up for a top-of-table clash with Catholic High in their final group game.
It was a day of match-ups that would decide the fate of some teams in the South Zone B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship. The day’s fixtures at CCAB pitted the traditional seeded teams against some up and coming challengers.
The first game of the day saw Ang Mo Kio Secondary (2010’s 4th place team) squaring off against Clementi Woods Secondary. Clementi Woods in particular, have been spectacular this season. In the earlier game against Catholic High, they put on exciting displays of volleyball, impressing with their key attackers, #15 and #18. Having lost narrowly to Catholic High, it was a crucial must-win tie for Clementi Woods against Ang Mo Kio.
The game started with both teams seemingly playing safely. Ang Mo Kio seemed to be having a nervous game, with their play peppered with unforced errors in their attack and court covering. The first set went to Clementi Woods.
The second set saw Ang Mo Kio coming out fighting. The players certainly played with more fire and aggression, with their
tall open spiker Marcus Cheong (#14) getting most of the points with good ball placement. The tight set was eventually closed out by Ang Mo Kio to force a rubber set.
The final set was a seesaw battle which saw the lead change hands numerous times, with no more than one or two points separating the teams. Ang Mo Kio finally pulled away at the 21-point mark to wrap up the set, and the game.
Ang Mo Kio will play Catholic High to decide who tops Group A on Thursday, February 2nd.
