CCAB, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 — Chong Boon Secondary beat Zhonghua Secondary 25-21, 25-18 in a crucial Group B tie in the South Zone B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.
The first set started with a string of errors by the Chong Boon #6, giving Zhonghua the advantage of a 5-0 lead. The Zhonghua #14 stamped his dominance with a few well-hit short spikes.
Although both teams seemed nervous, Chong Boon, in particular, did not look settled. However, the Chong Boon boys managed to get their act together, as their #11 played out a near flawless rally of points to quickly put Chong Boon back on level terms.
It was point for point till the closing stages of the game, when Chong Boon held on to register a close 25-21 win for the first set.
The second set again saw Zhonghua ahead slightly in the beginning, as Chong Boon were plagued by first ball and defensive errors. However, they settled down shortly, with #8 and #11 getting the points once again. The later half of the game saw the Chong Boon #6 suddenly coming alive and hitting quality spikes.
Zhonghua trailed at 16-20, but the difference was quickly widened with good spiking by the stronger Chong Boon attacks. Chong Boon eventually closed out the second set 25-18.
Both teams will next play Fairfield Methodist to decide their qualification hopes. Chong Boon will need only to win one more set to ensure qualification while Zhonghua will need to beat Fairfield in straight sets to force a 3-way tie.
