CCAB, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 — Raffles Institution overcame a 15-point deficit in the first quarter to beat Catholic High 54-49 in a second round group game in the South Zone B Division Basketball Championship.

Catholic High had earlier started the game in impressive fashion. Their forwards put together a variety of lay ups, inside plays and outside shooting to establish a 19-4, first-quarter lead. To compound Raffles’ woes, their starting centre Chan Chun Cheong (#13) came down with an unfortunate ankle injury midway through the first quarter.

However, Raffles Institution did not fold easily.

Led by an amazing shooting display from their point guard Zhuang Bao Kun (#11), Raffles Institution began to close the gap with a 12-6 run in the second quarter. He eventually finished as top scorer of the game with 17 points. His teammate RI #7 Lim Ming Jun (#7) also contributed 8 of his 14 points in the second quarter alone, including two crucial 3-pointers.

Raffles subsequently went on a 21-8 run in the fourth quarter to deal Catholic High their first loss of the season. Catholic High did put up a late rally but was let down by some crucial turnovers in the final seconds of the game. Forward Tan Yang Ming (#12) of Catholic High School led his team with 12 points.

Pei Cai Secondary beat Queensway Secondary in another game.

In Group X matches, Serangoon Garden Secondary shrugged off their earlier loss to Fairfield Methodist Secondary to register a well-earned 40-37 win over Guangyang Secondary. Peirce Secondary also won their first game in the second round against Holy Innocents’ High.
