Choa Chu Kang Sports Hall, Wednesday, February 15, 2012 — Jurong Secondary booked a spot in the final of the West Zone B Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship after seeing off Hua Yi Secondary 2-0 (25-23, 25-7) at the semi-finals.
Jurong had to endure a nerve wracking first set as Hua Yi gave Jurong a hard fight. However, Jurong flexed their muscles in the second set and held Hua Yi at bay to storm to a 25-7 win. Hua Yi were limited to just one kill in the second set compared to Jurong’s 6 kills.
Jurong had a total of 18 kills, 5 blocks and 6 service aces while Hua Yi had 9 kills, 6 blocks and 3 service aces. Qiuluan (Jurong #13) had a game high of 11 kills, scoring the most points in both sets.
Jurong started the first set on a good note as they stormed to an 8-5 lead. They kept a comfortable advantage over Hua Yi for the first half of the set, but gradually saw Hua Yi close in. At the 15-13 mark, Jurong had to call a timeout to reorganise themselves.
However, Hua Yi subsequently took the next point to narrow the score difference to just one point. Qiuluan (Jurong #13) eventually managed to open up the score gap once again, but Hua Yi were never far behind.
As the match carried on, both teams found themselves neck and neck at the 22-22 mark after Aijia (Jurong #4) sent a drop shot into the hands of Sonia (Hua Yi #2) who promptly stuffed the ball out. However, Jurong got the upper hand after Rebecca (Hua Yi #13) sent her serve out of bounds. Jurong then managed to reach set point only for Hua Yi to take back control of service.
Hua Yi however could not stage a comeback as they served the ball into the net for Jurong to take the set.
Jurong embarked on a rampage in the second set and constantly kept Hua Yi at bay. They raced to a 13-7 lead, and despite Hua Yi managing to score a few points, continued to score point after point.
Jiaxuan (Jurong #9) fired off several steady serves and allowed the team to take many points. She brought the team to match point after sending a serve which was deflected out by Sonia (Hua Yi #2). Aijia (Jurong #4) then rounded off the match for the team after powering a spike down the centre.
