Choa Chu Kang, Friday, February 17, 2012 — Nanyang Girls’ High triumphed 2-0 (25-22, 26-24) over Jurong Secondary in two hard-fought sets to clinch the title of West Zone B Division volleyball champions.

This was a major accomplishment for Nanyang, especially after their disappointing performance in the zonal final last year. Nanyang quickly asserted their dominance in the first set with a 6-5 lead after Nanyang’s #4 powerful strike. Nanyang looked comfortable as they led all the way to 18-11.

However at 18-12, a powerful spike by the Jurong #14 broke through the Nanyang’s defence to trigger a Jurong comeback that tied both teams at 19-19. From there on, the game was tense, with another tie at 21-21 before Nanyang managed to win the set 25-22 with a spike from their #2.

In the second set, Nanyang struggled to gain a strong footing as they only landed their first point at 1-5. Jurong proved to be an indomitable force on court, as they led 16-10. However, Nanyang put up a determined defence and they came back to tie the set at 20-20.

Nanyang struggled to fend off Jurong’s strong attacks, only managing a breakthrough at 23-22, their first lead in the second set. Their confidence shaken, Jurong’s defence faltered and repeatedly failed to save Nanyang’s spikes, allowing Nanyang to pull through to win 26-24.
