B Div Vball: Sembawang stun Chong Boon in Group C match

Ministry of Education Sports & Recreation Club, Wednesday, February 29, 2012 — South Zone champions Chong Boon Secondary were stunned by Sembawang Secondary in a Round One, Group C match at the B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.

Sembawang, the fourth-placed team from the North Zone, staged a surprise win as they beat Chong Boon 2-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-19).

Sembawang signalled they were no easy pushovers right from the start as they fought hard to match Chong Boon in the scoring stakes. The scores were neck and neck, tied at the 8-point and 12-point mark.

With the scores at 17-16 in Sembawang’s favour, they pulled a quick one over their opponents to surge to a 23-19 lead.

However, Chong Boon were not going down without an easy fight and fought back to level the scores 23-23 after a spike from Cher Ping (Chong Boon #6). Sembawang managed to regain the advantage after forcing a touch-out, but Cher Ping (Chong Boon #6) quickly levelled the scores once again with a spike from the outside.

With the first set at deuce (24-24), a hit error by Sembawang in the next rally gave Chong Boon the next point. Chong Boon then pressed home their advantage to take the opening set by blocking the Sembawang #2.

A tight start to the second set did not deter Sembawang from taking the lead. Despite errors in their play, they did not let slip their lead and continued to keep Chong Boon at bay. Chong Boon came close to levelling the score at 16-17, but were unable to turn the tables as Sembawang subsequently pulled ahead to win the set 25-18.

The third set was a closely contested one with Sembawang leading by just one point at the changeover.

In the second half of the set, Sembawang managed to pull ahead as Chong Boon struggled to put points on the scoreboard. Sembawang pulled ahead and were at match point after seeing a spike by Chong Boon find the net. They sealed the final point of the match after successfully blocking Chong Boon’s spike.
