B Div Tennis (Girls): RGS beat Nanyang 4-1 to finish 3rd

Kallang Tennis Centre, Monday, March 5, 2012 — Raffles Girls’ School (RGS) secured third placing in the National B Division Tennis Championship after a 4-1 win over Nanyang Girls’ High School (NYGH).

In the first singles, Claris Tan (RGS) beat Joey Seah (NYGH) 2-0 (6-1, 6-0).

Claris led 4-0 before Joey managed to win the next game for her first point. Claris’ offensive display saw her dictate play and force Joey into making errors. Claris remained steady and sustained her play to win the second set 6-0.

The same dominance happened in the second singles match with Rehmat (RGS) beating Kwan Kai Li (NYGH) 2-0 (6-1, 6-0).

Sabrina (RGS) beat Wu Qiujia (NYGH) 2-0 (6-4, 6-3) in a much closer third singles match. Both players were neck-and-neck up 4-4 but Qiujia then made several unforced errors which allowed Sabrina to continue steadily on to win the first set 6-4.

In the second set, both players kept each other on their toes as they kept pace with each other up to 3-3. Qiujia managed to force deuce in the next three games but Sabrina managed to wrap up the second set 6-4.

In the first doubles match, Yang Gin and Kristen of RGS beat Nicole Teoh and Amanda Yap of NYGH 2-0 (6-2, 6-4). After the loss of the first set, the NYGH pair were tied 4-4 in the second but a poor volley and an unforced error while holding the advantage saw them yield the set 6-4 to RGS.

Victoria Lim and Mildred Ang (NYGH) then beat Wei Ting and Bella (RGS) 2-0 (6-2, 6-4) to win a consolation point for NYGH.

When asked about how they felt about their consolation point, Victoria said: “I think we played well and did not choke under pressure”, while her partner Mildred said good communication was a deciding factor.

NYGH team captain Amanda said the tennis journey this year has been as a fulfilling one as everyone played their hardest and she promised that the Nanyang tennis team would do better the next year.
