Presbyterian High, Friday, March 23, 2012 — Catholic High booked a place in the semi-finals after beating Clementi Town 2-0 (25-22, 25-21) in a Round Two, Group Y match of the National B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.
Earlier on, Catholic High had pulled off a surprise victory over Xinmin Secondary and a second victory in this match would see them through at the expense of Xinmin. Their chances were boosted considering Clementi Town had already been eliminated from the competition before this match. Clementi Town fielded a starting lineup, half of which consisted reserves and could be seen as playing clearly for the experience.
Despite this, Catholic High committed several errors and saw the match descend into a close fight. It was only midway through the first set did Catholic High manage to pull ahead to lead 16-13. Clementi Town continued to play their own game as Catholic High pulled ahead to take the set 25-22.
The second set was still a close set despite the tempo being slower. Clementi Town’s Oliver (#7) did not give Catholic High an easy time as he took several points with his strong spikes.
After being drawn 9-9, Catholic High pulled ahead and continued with the lead to win the set 25-17.
Catholic High finish second in Group Y and will face Group X leaders Shuqun Secondary in the semi-finals on Friday, March 30. Group Y leaders Dunman Secondary will play Group X runner up St Hilda’s Secondary in the other semi-final.
