CCAB, Thursday, March 29, 2012 — Defending champions Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) beat Hwa Chong Institution 12-3 to retain the National B Division Water Polo Championship.
It was the third B Division title in a row for ACS(I).
The two teams had met earlier in the preliminary round and ACS(I) had won that encounter 10-3.
ACS(I) also beat Raffles Institution, St Andrew’s Secondary, Outram Secondary and ACS (Barker Rd) to qualify for the semi-finals undefeated.
It was a close game up to half time, with ACS(I) leading by 5-2. ACS(I) kept their noses in front in the third quarter, outscoring HCI 2-1 to lead 7-3 into the fourth quarter.
That was when ACS(I) pulled away, scoring five unanswered goals to wrap up the title.
“I think the difference was the unity of the team,” said Sean Ang, captain of the ACS(I) water polo team. “I credit each and every single one of them as it would not have been possible without them.”
On whether nerves played a part in the first half of the game, Sean said: “I guess in the 2nd half everyone calmed their nerves and played their hearts out.”
The game also marked the closing of a chapter for the team.
“Personal highlight of the game? I guess it’ll have to be the fact that it’s the last game we’ll be playing together as a team,” added Sean.
