B Div Vball: Shuqun cruise to victory over Catholic High in semi-final

Presbyterian High, Friday, March 30, 2012 — Shuqun Secondary cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14) victory over Catholic High in the semi-finals of the National B Division Boys’ Volleyball Championship.

Shuqun dominated the scoring tally as they scored 49 points from 43 kills, four blocks and two service aces. Catholic High on the other hand had 27 points from 23 kills and four blocks. Haziq (Shuqun #10) emerged as the top scorer once again with 18 points from 17 kills and one service ace.

Shuqun led from start to finish in all three sets as Catholic High struggled to make their mark against the West Zone champions. In the first set, Shuqun blitzed to a 9-2 lead before Catholic High called for a timeout. However, they could not break Shuqun’s scoring streak as they handed Shuqun the next point after a spiking error by Benedict (Catholic High #10).

Shuqun continued extending their lead and another timeout by Catholic High at the 17-7 was also not enough to break their momentum. Despite Catholic High being able to hold Shuqun for several points subsequently, they could not overturn their deficit and saw Shuqun take the set.

Catholic High came closest to turning the tables on Shuqun in the second set as errors by Shuqun finally saw Catholic High trail by just one point at the 12-13 mark. However, Shuqun quickly regained their momentum and pulled ahead to lead 21-15. Catholic High could not catch up and eventually saw Shuqun win the set 25-17.

Shuqun continued their winning form in the third set and pulled ahead to lead 8-1 before a service error broke their scoring streak.

Catholic High tried to catch up but were no match for Shuqun as the latter pulled ahead to lead 16-8 and then 23-12.

Shuqun were at match point after net touch by Catholic High and they sealed the set after Catholic High returned a shot out of bounds.

Shuqun will now make their first appearance in the final since 2008 and will take on five time defending champions St Hilda’s Secondary and will certainly be gunning for their first ever B Division championship title. Having beaten St Hilda’s in their previous meeting, it will certainly be a match to watch to see if Shuqun can pull off another upset.

The final will be played on Tuesday, April 3 at Toa Payoh Sports Hall.

Catholic High will play Dunman in the 3rd/4th placing match on Monday, April 2.
