The Nanyang Technological University will offer the Bachelor of Science in Sports Science and Management degree, according to the Straits Times (NTU introduces sports degree; Wednesday, February 11, 2009).

The Republic Polytechnic and the Nanyang Polytechnic currently offer sports-related diploma courses while the Singapore Sports School also provides students with the option of taking the Diploma in Sports Management & Exercise Science from the Auckland University of Technology which is administered by a private commercial school.

The only option for students keen on pursuing a sports degree is to go overseas, finances permitting.

Oon Jin Teik, chief executive officer of the Singapore Sports Council, told the Straits Times: “We need a steady supply of manpower with the right skill sets and competencies to address the needs of the sports industry. NTU’s launch of the sports degree is well-aligned with the advancement in Singapore sports.”

Students who manage to gain admission to the NTU degree programme will specialise in either Sport Science or Sport Management.

Polytechnic diploma holders need to apply by February 28th while A-Level students have until April 1st.
