Farrer Park Tennis Centre, Thursday, April 12, 2012 — St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) Junior shocked the tennis community by beating Anglo-Chinese School (Junior) in the Junior Division final of the National Primary Schools Tennis Championships.
Prior to this outing, SJI Junior had never passed the round robin stages of the tournament. This year, the team managed to beat two tennis powerhouses — ACS (Primary) in the semi-finals and ACS (Junior) in the final.
SJI Junior won two out of the three matches against ACS (Junior) in the final. ACS Junior have been the champions in the Junior Division for the past few years.
“We are so proud of the SJI tennis team. They have been dedicated to the cause of this championship and finally they have made history for our school,” said Muthiah Philip, SJI Junior’s head of department for PE & Aesthetics.
ACS (Primary) took the bronze medal after beating Henry Park Primary 3-0 in the third/fourth placing match.
In the Senior Division, ACS (Junior) clinched gold when they beat ACS (Primary) 2-1 in the final. Bronze went to Temasek Primary who beat Rosyth School.
