Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Thursday, April 5, 2012 — Karthic Harish Ragupathy of Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) won the A Division 5000m gold in a time of 16 minutes 52.19 seconds at the 53rd National Schools Track and Field Championships.

He was the only runner in the field to go under 17 minutes.

Jared Hui of Catholic Junior College was second in 17:15.98 while Bryan Yong of Raffles Institution was third in 17:35.76.

With five laps to go, Karthic was essentially running against himself after Bryan Yong dropped off the pace he was setting.

The Championship record of 15:40.58 was set by Darshananth S/O Jayaraman, then of Innova Junior College, in 2006.

In the 2011 A Division 5000m race, the top three runners went under 17 minutes. The race was won by Jeevaneesh S/O Soundararajah, also of HCI, in 16:15.28.

Karthic also won the A Division 3000m Steeplechase final.

Earlier in the year, Karthic also won the A Division Cross-Country title to become only the third schoolboy in history to win all three divisions.
