PESEB, Tuesday, July 3, 2012 — Catholic High remained on course to defend their South Zone C Division Basketball Championship title with a 102-9 thrashing of Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road).
Catholic High finished Round 1 with a perfect 3-0 win-loss record while ACS(BR) lost all three of their group matches.
Catholic High qualify for the second round as Group A winners while Peicai Secondary follow them into Round 2 after finishing as runners-up.
Toh Tze Cong (#15) of Catholic High finished with a game-high 43 points, scoring six consecutive baskets within one minute in the last quarter. Catholic’s High’s Warren Wong (#12) also stood out with three 3-pointers.
ACS(BR) played a cautious game and tried not to commit any fouls on the Catholic High players, who managed to deftly cut through their weak defence.
Catholic High’s defense, on the other hand, pressured the ACS(BR) attack with their intimidating height and man-to-man blocking. ACS(BR) could not convert their chances, leaving them with zero points at the end of two quarters.
Despite being 52 points down at half time, ACS came back fighting after Isaac Hwa En Hao (#10) lifted his team’s morale with a 3-point shot. The third quarter was ACS’s best showing in the game as they put in seven points and restricted Catholic High to scoring only 16.
However, the fourth quarter was a different story as Catholic High reached 100 points with a 3-point play by #15 in the last minute of the game.
Even though ACS(BR) went out in Round 1, Captain Cedric Sim was proud of his team’s showing.
He said, “We tried our best during this competition. Today, we played better than in the previous matches considering we almost reached our target of 10 points.”
