PESEB, Wednesday, July 4, 2012 — Hua Yi Secondary progressed into Round Two of the West Zone C Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship as Group C leaders after a decisive 2-0 (25-6, 25-10) victory over Boon Lay Secondary.
Drawn together with traditional powerhouses Jurong and Shuqun Secondary in what was dubbed as the ‘Group of Death’, Hua Yi faced an uphill task in qualifying for the next round. They proved their naysayers wrong when they edged to a 2-0 victory over Jurong Secondary, but unfortunately let slip their lead to lose 2-1 to Shuqun Secondary. Their victory over Boon Lay gave them all three points and catapulted them to the top of Group C with 10 points while Jurong join them in the next round after beating Shuqun Secondary.
Hua Yi started off the first set strongly as they raced to a 6-0 lead. They managed to win many points through their serves as Boon Lay found trouble returning their attacks. Boon Lay managed to take several points into long rallies but Hua Yi ultimately exploited Boon Lay’s defensive gaps to win the set 25-6.
Hua Yi had a shaky start in the second start as unforced errors started creeping into their play. They committed two service errors out of their first three serves to get off on a slow start.
Boon Lay kept up their morale and gave their all to hold off Hua Yi. However, the latter quickly recovered to pull back ahead to take the set 25-10.
Hua Yi will now face Group A leaders Nanyang Girls’ High and Group B runner up Hillgrove Secondary in the next round.
