Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 6, 2012 — Pioneer Secondary convincingly beat Chestnut Drive Secondary 45-21 to remain in the running for a spot in Round 2 of the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
Pioneer Captain Kenji Goh finished with a game-high of 25 points, while Chestnut Drive’s Darren was top scorer for his team with 6 points.
Pioneer needed a win to remain on course to finish in the top two of Group A after a defeat by Unity Secondary, while Chestnut Drive were gunning for their first win of the season.
Pioneer was slow to warm up and were outscored 7-9 the first quarter, but a tight defence and two giants in the attack — Reece Low (#15) and Kenji Goh (#12) — helped them surge ahead to lead 23-13 at half time.
Throughout the match, Pioneer’s Eric Hoe (#8) kept up the pressure on Chestnut Drive’s Mingwei (#7), stealing the ball away from his opponent on multiple occasions or forcing him into making turnovers. Converting those turnovers was the key to Pioneer’s victory.
Pioneer hope to keep up their winning streak when they next meet Westwood Secondary on Tuesday, July 10th, in their final and most crucial match of the season so far. Both teams are currently level on six points so the game will determine which team joins Unity in the second round.
Chestnut Drive player, Jie Min (#13), and captain, Darren (#11) were happy with their team’s showing, especially since this was their highest-scoring match, and are hoping to garner a win when the face Hong Kah Secondary on Tuesday, July 10th.
