Singapore Basketball Centre, Monday, July 9, 2012 — Woodgrove wrapped up their first round campaign with a 79–10 victory over North View Secondary to advance into the second round of the North Zone C Division Basketball Championship.
The win gave Woodgrove a perfect 3-0 win-loss record and top spot in Group C. North View finished last with their third straight loss.
Woodgrove’s top scorer was Thean Zhi Wei (#5) who finished with a game-high 24 points despite being one of the shortest players on the court. Zhi Wei’s agility enabled him to reach North View’s basket before their defense could get into formation after a turnover.
Zhi Wei’s teammate, Teo Yung Jin (#13), who scored 23 points, took a slightly different approach. Being relatively tall, he caught offensive rebounds and intercepted passes with ease, turning them into points for his team. Yung Jin put in the first points less than 10 seconds after the tip-off, giving Woodgrove a lead that they did not lose for the entire match.
North View Secondary with a zone defense formation, but were unable to completely box off their perimeter, giving Woodgrove many scoring opportunities. North View were also unable to collect defensive rebounds, and Woodgrove were able to catch their own rebounds multiple times even while surrounded by White’s defense, allowing them to keep a constant attack going until they scored or got fouled.
Woodgrove’s defense, however, extended to their entire half of the court, making it exceedingly difficult for North View Secondary to advance the ball, and also allowing Woodgrove to advance or fall back quickly in the event of a turnover.
Wang Jin Qing (#8) was a particularly aggressive defender, intercepting North View’s passes and blocking their drives.
North View’s Wallace Lum (#9) and Vincent Toh (#7) made many spirited attempts to get through Woodgrove’s defense, but these more often than not ended in turnovers.
While Wallace and Vincent did manage to get their fair share of shots at the basket, their persistent lack of accuracy cost North View dearly, and Woodgrove were able to convert their rebounds into more scoring opportunities for Zhi Wei (#5).
Woodgrove will next face Yishun Secondary in their first game in the second round of the North Zone Championship. The match will take place at Singapore Basketball Centre, on Wednesday, July 11th, 2.30pm.
