PESEB, Wednesday, July 11, 2012 — Nanyang Girls’ High qualified for the semi-finals of the West Zone C Division Girls’ Volleyball Championship on top of their group after beating Hua Yi Secondary 2-0 (25-22, 25-6) in their Round Two top of the table clash.
Hua Yi let slip their lead late in the first set to allow Nanyang to steal victory. They then imploded during the second set as their defensive lapses saw Nanyang blitzed to a commanding win. Nanyang ruled the scoring tally with 38 points scored from 27 kills, 4 blocks and 7 service aces while Hua Yi had 8 points from 4 kills, 2 blocks and 1 service ace.
However, Nanyang’s 13 hit errors in the first set meant that they had to work extra hard to notch a win.
Hua Yi exploited Nanyang’s hit errors right at the start as they saw themselves leading 13-8 before the latter called a timeout. During this time, Nanyang had committed seven hit errors as they repeatedly sent their spikes out of bounds.
Upon the restart, Li Ting (Hua Yi #12) successfully blocked an attempt from Sandra Tang (Nanyang #6) to continue Hua Yi’s scoring streak.
Nanyang eventually came to within one point of Hua Yi at the 17-16 mark but a hit error by the former saw Hua Yi continue on with the lead. However, Nanyang quickly closed back in and levelled the score 19-19. Both teams were neck and neck and were tied at the 22-22 mark as Sandra (#6) repeatedly exploited a weak spot in Hua Yi’s defense.
Nanyang quickly took the lead and secured the first set 25-22.
Nanyang settled in quickly in the second set as Hua Yi’s defenses virtually imploded. They had trouble with their first ball and saw Nanyang pull ahead to a 6-0 lead.
Li Ting (Hua Yi #12) then scored her team’s only point of the set when her spike was deflected out of bounds.
Nanyang continued their scoring streak soon after and did not commit any hit errors until the 15-point mark. However, Hua Yi committed a formation error right after for Nanyang to take control of serve once again.
Nanyang continued of the set in cruise control and quickly wrapped up the match 25-6.
Nanyang will face Jurong Secondary in the semi-finals on Friday while Hua Yi will play Bukit Panjang Government High.
