Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 20, 2012 – New Town Secondary beat Westwood Secondary 46-33 to earn a semi-final place in the West Zone C Division Boys’ Basketball Championship.
The win placed New Town second in Group X, behind Bukit Panjang Government High and above Hillgrove Secondary on points average, after all three teams finished with identical 4-1 win-loss records.
Meanwhile, the loss saw Westwood exit the competition winless in Round 2.
New Town dominated from the start and had a comfortable 26-9 lead in the first half. New Town could afford to rotate their players and put in their reserves.
Westwood were missing injured captain Brandon Law (#12) and they struggled without him. They were not as lethal, with only Ng Wei Hong (#11) and Chai Zhi Xun (#6) helming the attack. They also suffered from many missed passes.
Westwood tried to come back in the last quarter, outscoring New Town 13-5. However, New Town already had a comfortable lead and Westwood barely threatened.
New Town rounded up the game 46-33 to earn a semi-final place.
Westwood’s Ng Wei Hong (#11) and Chai Zhi Xun (#6) were the joint top scorers of the match with 14 points apiece. New Town captain Denilson Soh (#7) was the top scorer for his team with 11 points, which included one three-pointer.
Despite the loss, Westwood captain Brandon Law (#12) was pleased.
“The team played well throughout the competition,” Brandon said.
New Town captain Denilson Soh (#7) had similar sentiments about his team.
“The team played well today. The team has improved a lot,” Denilson said.
Denilson also had positive things to say about the five Secondary One players in his team.
“They improved a lot. They played really well today. I hope that the C Division team next year would also be able to make it to a Top 4 spot,” said Denilson.
In their semi-final game on Monday, July 23rd, New Town will face their toughest opponent yet, defending West Zone and National champions, Unity Secondary. The game will be held at Clementi Sports Hall.
