Clementi Sports Hall, Friday, July 20, 2012 — River Valley High beat the School of Science and Technology 37-30, consigning the latter — who had lost only one game in the first round — to the bottom of the group. SciTech ended its West Zone C Division Basketball Championship campaign with five straight losses in Round 2. With the group dominated by Unity Secondary and Jurong Secondary, neither SciTech nor River Valley will progress to the semi-finals.

River Valley’s Cai Yu Han (#11) had a game-high 14 points, including two that, while credited to him on the scoresheet, were actually scored by SciTech’s Hung Kye (#7) who scored through the wrong basket right after half-time.

Yu Han did score most of his points on his own, though, including a streak of six points in the third quarter with three well-aimed shots that gave River Valley a good lead over SciTech.

The School of Science and Technology, on their own part, had Yi Chieh (#11), who used his superior height to good effect. Although Yi Chieh’s shooting was marred with inaccuracies, by repeatedly putting pressure on the defense and being tall enough to catch his own offensive rebounds, he managed to put in a respectable 10 points for this team.

Over the course of the game, both sides made many errors that resulted in turnovers. River Valley’s passes would sometimes go completely unreceived while SciTech had its own share of fumbles while passing or dribbling, allowing River Valley to steal the ball on more than one occasion.

River Valley played aggressively, at times to their own disadvantage. The team racked up a total of 20 fouls during the game, more than once placing River Valley in a penalty situation. SciTech were not always able to convert them with only five of their 30 points coming from free throws.

In the end, however, despite outscoring River Valley in the final quarter, SciTech were unable to close the gap between the teams.

This game is the end of the road for both the SciTech and River Valley High. SciTech finished the season with an overall 3-6 win-loss record while River Valley High did better with a 7-3 record.
