Clementi Sports Hall, Monday, July 23, 2012 — Jurong Secondary easily overcame Bukit Panjang Government High 86-59 in a lacklustre semi-final, booking their place in the West Zone C Division Basketball Championship Final.
Jurong’s captain, Mao Yu Xian (#14), finished as top scorer with 26 points, while Bukit Panjang’s Ang Zi Yang (#9) had a team-high 18.
The game got off to an impressive start as Jurong’s Eugene Yeong (#8) opened the scoring with a 3-point shot, and Bukit Panjang’s Ang Zi Yang adding another 3-point shot soon after to level the score.
However, both teams lacked accuracy and seemed to lack drive, failing to put in any further shots for three minutes until Bukit Panjang’s captain, Shawn Ee (#7), broke the deadlock.
By half time, Jurong had a comfortable 20-point, 42-22 lead.
At one stage in the third quarter, Jurong’s Eugene Yeong (#8) caught an interception and had a clear shot at the basket, but failed to convert. His teammate, Ang Zi Yang (#9) caught the subsequent rebound, but also failed to convert that effort.
Jurong were off-form, but still managed to maintain at least a 20-point lead. At one point in the fourth quarter, their lead was as large as 31 points. Jurong scored no less than 20 points each quarter to wrap up the win 86-59.
Bukit Panjang’s captain, Shawn Ee (#7), felt that his team did not play well, but said that “at least it wasn’t the worst that we’ve played.” They hope to play their best when they go up against New Town for third place on Wednesday, July 25th.
Jurong’s Mao Yu Xian (#14) and Eugene Yeong (#8) remarked after the match that they expected a tougher fight from Bukit Panjang, but applauded their friendliness and sporting behaviour on court. They also thought that their team did not play well, especially in the third quarter.
Jurong are looking forward to having a “fun and exciting” rematch when they meet Unity Secondary for the second time in eight days in the final which will take place at 3pm on Thursday, July 26th, at Jurong East Sports Hall.
