Bishan Stadium, Saturday, September 8, 2012 — National sprinter and Olympian Gary Yeo won the men’s 100m final at the inaugural Singapore National Games track and field competition.

Running in lane six, Gary overcame a slow start to claim the gold medal for Pasir Ris-Punggol in 10.84 seconds. Lee Cheng Wei, running for Tampines, finished just 0.05 seconds behind. It was a reverse of the 200m final where Cheng Wei had outrun Gary to take home the 200m title on Sunday, September 2nd.

Elfi Mustapa, also representing Pasir Ris-Punggol, settled for the bronze medal in 10.98 seconds.

“I participated just to support the Singapore National Games and I feel that this is a good step ahead towards fostering a sporting culture in Singapore,” said Gary about the inaugural Singapore National Games.

“Definitely the hamstring injury I sustained affected my timing,” said Gary, who clocked a personal best time of 10.57 at the recent London Olympics.

“I am going to focus more on relay for the time being as we are preparing for the ASEAN University Games at the end of the year and to qualify for the Southeast Asian Games 4x100m in 2013. We are also looking at the possibility of taking six months off next year to train and try to qualify for the world championships although this is not confirmed.”
