Vientiane, Saturday, December 15, 2012 — Gary Yeo, 26, of Singapore won the 100m sprint final at the ASEAN University Games in a new personal best time of 10.44 seconds.
In doing so, Gary became the fourth-fastest Singaporean over the distance. Only U.K. Shyam, who holds the current national 100m record of 10.37s, Canagasabai Kunalan (10.38s) and Muhamad Hosni (10.41s) have run faster than Gary.
Calvin Kang of Singapore finished third in 10.57s. Calvin has the fifth-fastest ever 100m time of 10.52s for a local.
Hadi Mohd Noor Imran of Malaysia was second in the race with a time of 10.56s.
Gary’s previous personal best was 10.57s which he set at the 2012 London Olympics.
Gary’s time earned him a spot in the 2013 South East Asian (SEA) Games but he suffered disappointment along with his 4x100m relay teammates — Muhammad Amirudin Jamal, Lee Cheng Wei and Calvin Kang — when they were disqualified in the relay final.
Gary, running the second leg, could not catch Cheng Wei before the latter ran out of the box.
The quartet set the current national record of 39.58s for the 4x100m relay on May 11th 2012 at the Asian Grand Prix in Thailand.
