NUS University Town EduSports Hall, Wednesday, January 16, 2013 – A close fight eventually saw Singapore Polytechnic (SP) squeak past Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) 42-41 in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Basketball Championship.

This was the second win in a row for NP, after registering an opening 66-56 win over defending champions, Republic Polytechnic.

NP led 24-21 at half time.

Pang Chong Jing (#17) of NP scored a game-high of 11 points, with teammate Sng Guo Liang (#10) contributing 10.

In the last quarter, NP tied it up at 41-41 with a 28 seconds left in the game, following a timeout. With 16 seconds left in the game, SP tried to run down the clock but NP managed to draw a foul and Chong Jing went to the free throw line.

Chong Jing managed to score one of the two free throws to give his team a slim one-point lead, and though SP tried their best, they lacked sufficient time and the final buzzer sealed their fate.

NP captain Yap Wei Liang (#6) was happy with the win but felt his team were a little complacent.

Said Wei Liang: “We were complacent from our previous win over RP, who a formidable opponent. We should have had a bigger lead in this game.”

“Though we have a lot of freshmen on the team, the team chemistry is good, since we played together in POL-ITE,” added Wei Liang.

SP captain Tok Jian Sheng (#81) recognised the hard work that the team had put in since POL-ITE.

“We have been gymming and running a lot, thus we have improved. But for our next game (against RP), we hope to have a minimum of turnovers and have more field goals,” said Jian Sheng.

SP will next play RP on Saturday, January 19th, 11:30am while NP will play SIM also on the same day and at the same time.

Both games will be played at the NUS UTown EduSports Hall.
