Singapore Polytechnic, Wednesday, January 23, 2013 – Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) came back to beat the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) 47-46 in the last minute of play but it was not enough to qualify them for a semi-final spot in the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic (IVP) Netball Championship.
This result meant three teams — SIM, NP and Temasek Polytechnic — all finished with identical records of 2 wins and 2 losses but it was SIM that squeaked through to the semi-finals on goal difference.
The National University of Singapore (NUS) also qualified for the semi-finals as group winners with four straight wins.
It was a close match with SIM having kept the lead for three quarters, before losing it in the final quarter.
NP were always within touching distance of SIM. At the end of the first quarter, NP trailed 11-13.
Both teams were evenly matched in the second quarter, scoring 12 goals each for SIM to maintain a two-goal, 25-23 lead heading into half time.
Although they picked up the pace and had a height advantage over NP, SIM were not able to pull away from NP.
This neck-and-neck game continued with SIM outscoring NP 13-11 to lead 38-34 heading into the final quarter. The fourth quarter saw NP finally closing the gap at 46-46. With momentum on their side, NP managed to score one final point before the final whistle to win 47-46.
NP capatain Trina Young felt that NP were coming in as underdogs and they had nothing much to lose. Their only goal was to focus on playing the game.
Said Trina: “Having played in the Singapore University Games (SUniG) before, the universities are stronger. SIM were definitely very experienced opponents.”
Trina said her team managed to play their own game and not try to catch up with the pace of the SIM players.
“It just proves that polytechnics can do it if we want to,” said Trina.
On the SIM side, both captains Theora Lim and Carmen Sarah Wee felt that it was a fast-paced game. Their team tried to keep up with NP’s pace, which resulted in many missed passes.
“There was a subconscious complacency. We were quite sluggish during warm-up,” said Theora.
Carmen added: “NP managed to keep their game. We tried to keep up with them but we should have controlled our own game. We need more communication and composure.”
SIM will play the Nanyang Technological University in the semi-finals on Monday, January 28th, 7pm, at the Singapore Polytechnic netball courts.
